ECO NEWS/FACTS

Calling all Green Artists!

Artistic and interested in the environment? Then this contest is for you!

Halton's second annual Waste Management calendar cover art contest runs from September 1st to October 9th. Halton students from kindergarten to Grade 8 are invited to submit their artwork based on this year's theme of "Reduce, reuse, recycle - everyday" in any of these materials: chalk, charcoal, collage, crayon, marker, paint, and pencil. Entries should feature a blue box and a green cart as well as a positive environment.

Ask Mrs. Doyle, Sheridan's Teacher Librarian, for more information and related books on recycling, waste management, and protecting our environment.

Visit www.halton.ca for contest details, entry forms, and waste management images.

Welcome and Welcome Back!
schoolhouse It is our pleasure to welcome back our Sheridan families and to extend a warm welcome to families who are new to the school. We look forward to renewing partnerships and establishing new ones as we enjoy the 2009-10 school year together.

EQAO Results
In the spring, most of our Grade 3 students wrote the primary provincial assessment of Reading, Writing and Mathematics.
test
The few students who were exempted from one or more parts of the assessment were counted in the overall scores reported on the EQAO website as a 0 (since they couldn't score at Levels 3 or 4 without writing the assessment). Because we have such a small number of students who write the assessments in any given year, there tend to be large fluctuations in scores from one year to the next. That being said, we are pleased to report that this year our results were significantly higher than they were last year. Specifically, of the students who wrote the assessment, 73% scored at Level 3 (the standard) or Level 4 (above expectations) in Reading, 87% scored at Levels 3 and 4 in Writing and 80% scored at Levels 3 and 4 in Math. Congratulations to the students for their hard work throughout the year as well as during the testing and to the teachers who worked hard to make sure that the students were as well prepared as possible. Individual Student Reports will be sent home to parents as soon as they arrive at the school.

FROM THE LIBRARY
Summer Reading
Were you a summer reader? Perhaps you were one of the many students who participated in the TD Summer Reading Club at your local Oakville Public Library branch.

If so, congratulations on keeping up your reading skills! Studies indicate that reading a minimum of six books during the summer is key to maintaining student reading levels.
If you are wondering what books were most popular, here is a list of the top five:

• Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney,
• Babymouse by Jennifer L. Holm,
• The Hardy Boys: Undercover Brothers by Scott Lobdell,
• Junie B., First Grader by Barbara Park,
• The Last Straw by Jeff Kinney.

Check out these titles, and other books by these authors, from Sheridan's own library!   top

International Literacy Day    reading
International Literacy Day was inaugurated in 1967 by UNESCO.

September 8th is the date of this annual event which encourages everyone to reflect on and celebrate literacy. Each year countries around the world host local and national events that recognize the value of literacy and the need to increase literacy rates particularly amongst women and girls.

The United Nations declared 2003 - 2012 the Literacy Decade.

For more information visit the links to UN and UN System sites that are available at:
http://www.un.org/Depts/dhl/literacy..

In Ontario, take the International Literacy Day Challenge details are available at:
http://ontarioliteracycoalition.com/2009/08/18/take-the-international-literacy-day-challenge/

The Oakville Public Library ECR@R program is an awareness campaign introducing families to the many ways to "explore and experience pre-reading skills". There is, for example, a free concert with Chris McKhool as part of Public Library Week on October 19th.

Pick up your free guide at your local branch or visit www.opl.on.ca for tips and explanations of the six reading skills that, when developed, aid a child's literacy journey.  top

Healthy Snack
Now in our third full year, Sheridan's Healthy Snack program is an opportunity to promote healthy eating twice each week by providing all of our students with a nutritious snack.
healthysnack
Research studies support the existing link between nutrition and a child's readiness to learn. When a child's stomach is empty, everything else is secondary. Our goal is to promote the connection between healthy food choices and improved learning.

We need you! All of our work is done by a team of incredible volunteers. If you have some time to give us we'd love to have you. Right now we are looking for food preparation helpers Wednesday and Thursday Mornings from 9:15 am to 11:00 am. Even one morning a month will help.

If you can help please email Chantal Ingram.

HOW PARENTS CAN HELP:
Homework
homework
Please be advised that our intention is for students to do their homework on their own. By all means, help your child if required or desired but please write a note in your child's agenda for the teacher so that he or she will know that your child did not have enough information to do the assigned work independently. If homework comes back completed and accurate, teachers assume that the students understand the concepts. A note from you will notify your child's teacher that further review is necessary to ensure understanding. Please note that homework is not marked as an example of student achievement, only as a genuine attempt to complete the assignment. Thank you for your help.

Kiss & Ride
car Parents are asked not to get out of their cars in the Kiss & Ride Lanes. Students are to be dropped off on the curbside after 8:30 a.m. From there, they will be escorted via the crosswalk to the playground.
Adults who wish to leave their vehicles or who are transporting students who must exit the vehicle on the non-curb side, are asked to please park in proper parking spaces in the parking lot. In this way, we can keep the Kiss & Ride area clear and moving safely, will keep traffic moving safely through the parking lot and will avoid unnecessary and potentially serious accidents. Also, never drive past a bus while it is loading or unloading students. Thank you for your co-operation.

Electronics
walkman Please do not send your child to school with electronics such as MP3 players, handheld video games and cell phones.
These items do not inspire movement during exercise breaks when students are expected to be active. Neither are they appropriate for use during classroom time when students are expected to be engaged in learning. They can also be a source of distress if they go missing.
