The H1N1 Immunization Clinic schedule is now available at the Halton Region Health Dept website (www.halton.ca)
The Halton Region Health Dept reminds us that the best way to prevent or reduce the spread of influenza and many other illnesses is through personal protection:
|
|
• Wash hands well and often with soap and water for at least 15 seconds. • Students are encouraged to have a travel-size container of alcohol-based hand sanitizer for personal use at school. • Cough and sneeze into your upper sleeve or a tissue, not your hand. Dispose of tissues immediately. • Clean commonly touched surfaces like door knobs, light switches, phones and computer equipment often. • If you have a fever and influenza-like symptoms, stay at home until you no longer have a fever and are well.

READ WITH YOUR CHILD EVERY NIGHT |
| No matter how old your child is, reading time with you is beneficial. A consistent routine that includes spending positive, uninterrupted time with you focused on a good book can help your child develop a powerful habit for life.
Our Home Reading Program is up and running again this year. Last year in February we sent home a package of information about the program with every child. For the sake of the environment, that information was sent home in September only with students who are new to Sheridan, including our JK students. For all others, the information is posted on the school's website in the "Online Backpack". If you did not receive the package, no longer have the information at home or do not have access to the Internet, please call the school or send a note in your child's agenda and an information package with be copied and sent home to you right away.
Please remember to send your child's Reading Calendar back to school regularly. At the end of each month students' nightly reading activity is reviewed and students will be eligible for a variety of incentives (e.g., books, certificates) throughout the year. Our goal is to encourage students to make reading at home a regular habit. Although reading every night would be ideal, we ask parents to support a minimum of two nights per week by providing your time and a well-lit space for your child to read with you.
Thanks for helping us foster a love of reading in all of our students. If you have a good picture of yourself reading with your child and would like to contribute it for our website, please call Mrs. Borbath at the school.

| QSP Magazine Fundraiser |
| Thank you to all Sheridan families and friends for your support of our annual magazine fundraiser, which ended October 28. We hope that you found the online ordering process helpful. For sales not completed online, please return order forms and cheques to the school as soon as possible. Proceeds from this fundraiser will be used to support literacy learning in school as well as at home through our Home Reading program. |

Kiss & Ride |
| Parents are asked not to get out of their cars in the Kiss & Ride Lanes. Students are to be dropped off on the curbside after 8:30 a.m. From there, they will be escorted via the crosswalk to the playground. Adults who wish to leave their vehicles or who are transporting students who must exit the vehicle on the non-curb side, are asked to please park in proper parking spaces in the parking lot. In this way, we can keep the Kiss & Ride area clear and moving safely, will keep traffic moving safely through the parking lot and will avoid unnecessary and potentially serious accidents. Also, never drive past a bus while it is loading or unloading students. Thank you for your co-operation. |
| Bullying Awareness Week |
Bullying Awareness Week runs from November 16 -22, 2009. Bullying is a relationship problem and is the result of one child having more power than another. It has been shown that, because bullying occurs in front of others, the best way to stop the bullying is to enlist peer support. Bullying usually stops when bystanders, otherwise known as silent witnesses, get involved in the bullying situation. Look for programs related to this problem on the Family Channel in November. |

| Sheridan is Getting Greener Every Day! |
 |
| We are proud of achieving Silver Eco Certification last year. It was our first year in the running and we did a great job! This continues to be an area of our School Effectiveness Plan and we are hopeful that we may do even better this year! Thanks for your daily support as we go for the Gold! |
| So far this year, we are doing the following: |
| ♦ Recycling of fine paper and drink containers in blue boxes |
 |
♦ Composting of food scraps by collecting items in green bins and kitchen catchers. We were one of the first elementary schools in Halton to begin this program last year. We made it took so easy that now every school in Halton is destined to have this program by January 2010. |
| ♦ Our Eco Team continues to meet every other Thursday. The team includes student, teacher, parent, custodian and principal representatives. Team members attend meetings and report back to classmates, staff, School Council, and parents about our next steps in ‘going green’. They also assist with collecting blue box and green bin items. Thanks to all for doing your part! |
| ♦ Trashless Tuesdays - Students bring lunches and snacks packed in reusable or recyclable containers and/or take garbage home with them on Tuesdays. |
. |
| ♦ Walking Wednesdays - As always, students are encouraged to walk to school each Wednesday. This cuts down on emissions, makes our parking lot safer and less chaotic and provides good exercise. More information is coming soon about walking to school on other days of the week. |
| ♦ Turning off lights when we leave classrooms. |
 |
| ♦ Shutting down computers when not in use. |
♦ Electronic newsletter delivery for families who have agreed to live without a paper copy. Please notify the school if you would like to switch to this option. |
| ♦ Photocopying - staff use both sides of a sheet of paper whenever possible. |
|
♦ GOOS Bins (Good On One Side) are located in each classroom to reuse paper.
|
♦ Celebrating and Sharing- Mrs. Doyle and three student members of our Eco Team attended a celebration at the Halton Regional Building on Bronte Road to be recognized for our accomplishments and to share eco-friendly ideas with other schools. |
| ♦ Green Learning: Mrs. Johnston's class will be part of an exciting learning opportunity designed to assess their current practices related to transportation, to learn about the impact of various modes of transportation on the environment and to learn how they can influence those around them to acquire more eco-friendly transportation habits. |

Loonies for the Sake of Our Students Campaign |
| Every day throughout Halton Region there is a student, a family, a staff member, or a community member who benefits from the many agencies that are sponsored by the United Way.
This year, the Halton District School Board asks you to support the annual United Way campaign with a Loonie Drive "For the Sake of our Students".
We have set aside Friday, November 20th as a time of celebration and contribution. We want to celebrate with our 53,000 students and nearly 5,000 staff members by inviting each to bring in a loonie to support our For the Sake of Our Students Campaign. All the money raised by school communities will be directed to the United Way organization in their community.
Working together we do make a difference.
Please join us on November 20th to support the United Way For the Sake of Our Students.
