Dance-a-thon
Sheridan is having our annual Dance-a-thon on Thursday, March 11th. This will be a fun filled event for the entire school. This year, the proceeds raised will go towards purchasing a SMART board for the school. Tax receipts will be issued for donations of $20 or more. Look in your child's backpack for the pledge forms. Parents are reminded, as with all Sheridan fundraisers, please do not send your child canvassing door to door.
The Big Chill The "Big Chill" basket raffle was very successful, making a profit of $651. These dollars will be used to fund technological resources for Sheridan. We owe a huge thank you to our parent volunteers; Camilla, Danielle, Karen M., Chantal and Tina for all their hard work on this project.
Next Council Meeting Tuesday, March 9th at 7:00pm in the staff room. All Sheridan parents are welcome to attend and participate in our discussions. Hope to see you there.

Sheridan Starts New Nutrition Program!
As you already know, for the past three years Sheridan has been partnering with Halton Food for Thought to provide the Healthy Snack program to all of our students each week. Not only does this program provide an opportunity for our kids to learn about the importance of healthy eating and nutrition, but it also gets extra food to kids who may need it to sustain them during the day. We are very excited to announce that in conjunction with our snack program we are now starting a Healthy Basket Program. An initiative from Halton Food for Thought, this Student Nutrition Program provides a basket of healthy snacks in each classroom for students who may not have enough food to sustain them during the day. What children eat profoundly affects their capacity to learn; children need the right foods so they can be alert and ready to grow, learn and play each day. Any student may access the basket, however, we ask that everyone respects the classroom guidelines and uses the healthy snacks provided when they are still hungry after any food from home has already been eaten. Each basket will contain such items as peanut-free granola bars, apple sauce cups, and fresh fruit.

If you are interested in helping with either the Healthy Snack or Healthy Basket program please let us know. From in-school volunteering and food preparation to grocery shopping every other week we can use your help. Please contact the school if would like to be involved.
HOW PARENTS CAN HELP
|
Send Indoor Running Shoes Every Day
Please ensure that your child has running shoes atschool each day. Students are expected to be physically active at some point each day. These opportunities include physical education classes, QDF sessions and sometimes nutrition break activities in the gym. Proper footwear is important for safety and students are not allowed to participate in socks or bare feet.

Numeracy Focus
Shortly after the March Break, students will begin focusing on thinking skills in math. Of course, there will continue to be a literacy focus to our work. Specifically, students will work on reading questions carefully (rereading them a few times if they don't seem to make sense the first time) and explaining answers clearly. When they have solved a problem or answered a math question, they will be asked to explain how they came up with their response.
To reinforce this learning, you may want to ask your child questions such as the following:
1. What is the question you are attempting to answer? 2. What is the problem you are trying to solve? 3. Are there several ways to go about answering this kind of question? 4. What strategy will you/did you use? 5. Is your answer correct? How do you know it's right? 6. Do you think you chose the best strategy? 7. If not, what would you do differently next time? 8. Will you to teach me how to do it?
The Club
Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Halton provides an after-school program for students in Grades 3-5. Tutors are mostly high school students who work with our students in the mall after school each Wednesday. Teachers ensure that student participants have literacy or numeracy homework as the focus for these sessions. Thank you to the tutors, teachers, program coordinators, parent drivers and student participants for making this valuable program work! If your child in Grade 3, 4 or 5 is not currently included and you would like them to join, please contact the school a.s.a.p. A limited number of spaces are available.
| FROM THE LIBRARY |
The Reading club Junior students are reading up a storm! |
|

|
| The Reading Club with Mrs. Doyle meets every Tuesday during the first Nutrition Break in the Library. Students are enjoying their extra borrowing privileges as they read their way through novels by their favourite authors. Selected fiction and non-fiction titles from the Silver Birch nominee list are also available and our readers will have the opportunity to both rate and vote for their favourite book. |

| Girls on the Run |
|
Beginning March 31, a group of girls will begin an exciting adventure in an after-school club called Girls on the Run. Although there is a workout component, the program focuses on self-esteem and developing social skills. This program takes place after school twice per week. Each girl in Grades 3-5 was provided with the opportunity to participate. Registration costs are paid by the parents of participants and some are subsidized by Girls on the Run. The 10-week program culminates in a 5K walk/run at Downsview Park on May 31. This non-competitive event is open to the public and anyone can participate and cheer on our girls. Mrs. Brooks (Coach Heather), Mrs. Borbath (Coach Malerie), and Miss Roosevelt (Coach Jessica) have all participated in coaches' training and are looking forward to a great time with the girls!
What About the Boys? Unfortunately, a "Boys on the Run" program has not been developed. Research conducted through a pilot program showed that a similar learning format is not effective with boys. Naturally, we are always on the lookout for an effective and beneficial opportunity for our boys. If you discover an existing program that we could consider for Sheridan, or have ideas about what might work, please contact the school.
